A couple of years ago I was getting my master's degree in Ed. Tech, and in a class about designing online learning we were asked to create a game for assessment. We were given links to several websites including http://textadventures.co.uk/. I had flash backs to my time as a middle school library aid when I would sneak into the librarians office to play a text adventure game. I would also check out the photography books, but that is another story. The game could have possibly been Zork, but I don't know for sure. Whatever the case, I was excited to find out that I could create my own. I soon became obsessed.
I created it for a project I do where students mapping a modern movie onto Joseph Campbell's heroic cycle. In order to complete the game you have to know the archetypal characters and their role in the adventure. It does require some knowledge of movies such as Star Wars and Harry Potter as well as the Gilgamesh epic which we read in class.
I imagined it as a test for the kids, but we end up playing together since I made it a little too complicated. I put it up on the big screen and then have the students make suggestions about what to do. If they are doing something deadly, I will steer them in the right direction. I was amazed at how excited they got about playing. I added some YouTube clips and sound effects, but it is still primarily a text based game. Introducing choices, randomness, and surprise really increased the engagement
I wish I would have done more planning on the front end. I kind of just dove in and started creating. When I changed something such as character name, I had to trace it all the way through the game to fix bugs. I also would have probably made it more self-explanatory.
My professor ended up giving me a poor score because she could not figure out how to play. I think my grade would have been better served by a PowerPoint game, but, well, you know.
